How do you ride the bus? - The educational role-playing game

We at Bus4Change have made a fun educational role-playing game for teachers to play in class with their students. The purpose of the game is to open up for discussion about the asocial culture that prevails on buses in Sweden. By carrying out the experiment and discussing the topic, the students can analyze their own behaviors regarding bus journeys but also regarding how they treat others.

The role-play is made to fit the Swedish school system and curriculum, the game and its instructions are therefor in Swedish. It is suitable for grades 7-9 and can be linked to the central content for the subject’s social studies and Swedish.

The only thing you need to do before you start is to read the instructions, print out the document “character sheets” and cut out each individual character sheet, then you are good to go!

  We want to spread awareness about the problem that is failed integration and encourage people to work towards a welcoming and including society for everyone. It’s not an uncommon stereotype that Swedish people usually are introverted and asocial, especially when it comes to riding the bus. It’s almost common courtesy to be quiet and not sit down next to someone you don’t know. And when we at Bus4Change started talking about this we realized that this level of asocial behavior might be quite problematic in a country where failed integration is becoming more of a problem. Research shows that every eighth Swedish youth feel some form of xenophobia towards others. Shielding oneself from other travelers in such a united place as a bus can then allow this negative differentiation of people to fester.
